INDECENT LANGUAGE.

ON THE FOOTBAU, GROUND

Evidently the police are determined, that the practice indulged in in some places of using bad language on the football ground will have to be discontinued. In pursuance of this object, a young man named Michael Remington appeared at the Police Court at Paeroa yesterday charged with using indecent language on the football ground at Mackaytown on the 6th inst. Defendant pleaded guilty to the charge. Constable Montgomery said this was a rather bad case of indecent language as it was used in the presence of women and children. Defendant was a player in a tootball match at Mackaytown on that date, and a number of players were on the ground, there being a good deal of " heated " play. Evidently defendant was kicked, for he made use of the expressions complained ot although he was warned both by the referee and the captain of his team. Quite a large number of women were within four of five yards of defendant at the time.

Asked tor an explanation, defendant said he could not exactly remember what words he used on the occasion, but he did not make a practice of using bad

language. He had been kicked, and he must have " lost his head."

The Magistrate (Mr Burgess) said he might have been inclined to take a

lenient view ol the matter, as no doubt defendant had been excited, except for the fact that he used the language after being cautioned. Bad language was very offensive to women, and no man who was a man would inflict on women

the pain of hearing such language. Probably defendant was excited at the time, and that might be some excuse, but he (the magistrate) could not overlook the lact that defendant had been warned. He would be fined £3 and costs 7s ; in default 14 days' imprisonment.
