JACK THE RIPPER.

BERLIN SENSATION.

Berlin is greatly excited over the arrest of a man who is suspected of being the author of a number of attacks on women, which led to their perpetrator being known as "Jack the Ripper." The man arrested is Richard Bennewatz,

a young house painter,

The outrages began two years ago, and the assailant's method was always

the same. He would overtake or meet a woman in* the street, ask her some simple question, and then out would come a murderous-looking knife, and ere the woman could even cry out the cowardly assailant would have -slashed at the lower part of her body. ,

In Berlin alone the scoundrel's victims numbered thirty-three. One of the earlier ot them died from her injuries, and several others were only saved by

unremitting medical attention

The series of attacks caused a reign of terror. Women .were afraid to go out without a male escort, and the men bought revolvers and other weapons and formed defence leagues. So great became the tension, that, anybody who answered in the least to the description of the assailant circulated was at once suspected ot being the " Ripper," and many innocent persons were seriously injured through their fancied resemblance to the miscreant.

Finding that Berlin was getting too hot for him, the " Ripper " disappeared, but subsequently appeared in several provincial towns, and recently made a fresh start in the low quarters of Berlin.

The police claim that they have evidence sufficient to secure the conviction of Bennewatz in ten cases, and legal proofs of his participation in other similar outrages.
