OFF THE LINE.

RAILWAY CARRIAGE DE-

RAILED

TRAIN DELAYED

The depatture of the " wild cat" goods train from Paeroa to Frankton on Friday evening was delayed for about an hour owing to the carriage being derailed at the Paeroa station. It appears that the train had arrived as usual somewhere about seven o'clock, and that intending passengers had been warned not to enter the carriage until

the Usual shunting operations were concluded. Whether the passengers did not leave the carriage, or got out and in again, is not clear, but it is certain that three passengers were in the carriage while shunting was going on. The shunting operations were not carried out without accident, ior the carriage by some means was pushed off the line. This may have been caused by the points not being properly locked, or it may have been, as one railway official stated, "just one of the ordinary derailments that are constantly happening." The carriage, however, left the metals and ploughed up the permanent way for a length of about a chain just in front of the station' office. The would-be passengers naturally had a bit of a shock, and made all possible haste to leave the carriage. One of them, a

gentleman, was in such a hurry to leave that he caught portion of his garments in the " gate " on the carriage, and had his lower garments torn considerably. None of the passengers were hurt. Steps were at once taken to get the carriage back on to the metals, and this being accomplished, the " wild cat " left on her journey through the Waikato about twenty minutes to nine —an hour behind the appointed time.
