HOCKEY NOTES.
[By "Sticks."]
The hockey ground, Junction Road, presented an animated appearance on Saturday last, there being a full attendance of members of both ladies' and
men's clubs and some very useful practice was indulged in. The first stars and shield match takes place .on Saturday, 13th inst., when a great struggle is anticipated between the teams selected, for they are very evenly matched. Among the players who are showing good form are the following new players : — Messrs A. Bray, Bagnall. Chalton, Darrick, Dempsey, Dean, Donnelly, I. Kennedy, C. Kenny, Rusden, and J. Whitmore. H. Walmsley and J. McCarthy are playing better than ever this season. W. Kenny, the club's most " heady " player, is in very solid form and will prove a stumbling block to opponents. " Barney ;I Whitmore, I am sorry to note, will not be , able to take as active an interest in the game as he would like for a few weeks, but will ba " all there" when required. " Veteran " Hubbard shows up more prominently in the forwards than backs, and should always be kept there. lam pleased to see H. Bray wielding the stick again after an en- [ forced absence of a fortnight, and he will soon be in his old form again. Brown is playing his usual game, but should be played on wing with Kenny. Rev. Lowery makes a most efficient referee, but the club cannot spare him out of the backs. Margraves and Tonge played better on Saturday than I have seen them do for some time, but the latter should retrain from trying to " shoot " goals from half-way.
