William Moran, of Waihi, who rescued a man named Ernest Edwards from Bovventown Heads (Waihi beach) on 31st December last, when both were capsized from a fishing boat, has been awarded a gold medal by the Royal Humane Society. Moran subsequently met with a blasting accident in the Grand Junction mine, and is now totally blind. Moran and the man he rescued had a narrow escape from being swept over the bar to sea after being some hours in the water. Press reports from Christchurch in reference to the award misspelt the men's names, and stated incorrectly that the accident occurred at Thames.
