COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING.

At the monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council yesterday afternoon the members present wjere Messrs Grace' (Chairman), Corbett, Crosby, Franklin, Laughlin, Lloyd, Marnnan, Nathan and Strange. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. TENDERS. Tenders were opened as follows :— Contract No. %—For the erection ot a pile bridge over the Waitoki Stream on the Mangaiti - Te Rohia Road, the bridge to consist of one thirty and two fifteen feet

Contract; No. 103—For general repairs and renewals to bridges and culverts on the Rotokohu Road. ....•■. ,

Contract No. 104—For general repairs and improvements to Peel's Creek-Incognita Road.

Contract No. 105—For laying one chain platform and forming and gravelling eight chains footpath near Doherty's Creek.

Contract No. 106—For forming about 12 chains Mangaiti Bridge Road.

Contract No. 107—For clearing about 360 chains of drains at Waitoa.

[No tender accepted.] Contract No. 108—For clearing and improving 60 chains of drain on the Ngutumunga Road.

Contract No. 109 —For the supply and delivery of .£2OO worth of metal on the Main Road near Karangahake.

Contract No. 110—For the supply and delivery of ,£IOO worth of metal on the road from the Main Road to the Rahu Road.

Contract No. Ill—For clearing the Golden . Cross-Whariki-rauponga track for a length of 480 chains.

engineer's report. The report, of the engineer (Mr C. Bray) was read as follows :—

" Footpath from Main Road to Extraction Company's Works.—The distance is about, 58 chains, and the estimated cost of making a footpath is £72 10s.

" Re improving road to Silverstream Mine at Maratpto.—'lhe length ot road asked for is about. 40 chains, and the estimated cost of the work is about ,£3 per chain for formation and, culverting; and I might suggest to the Council that an application be made for a grant from the Mines Department.

" Netherton-Turua Road. — For a

length ot about 60 chains this road

formation is very flat, and to make up ■*tbe formation would cost about 22s per chain or a total ot £66. I might point out that it would not be wise to do any work on this road at this time of the year, as it the formation was made up it would become impassable. "Re dedication ol roads in Komata South Settlement—These roads have been completed in accordance with the plans and specifications, and I have to advise that the deed ot dedication could now be completed."

Mr Laughlm moved that the footpath from Junction Road to the Extraction Company's works at Paeroa, be made, as recommended by the engineer. This was seconded,by Mr Nathan, but the motion Was lost.

It. was decided, on Mr Lloyd's motion, to apply to Government for a grarit for the Silverstream ; -Road at Maratoto. Consideration of the matter of forming portion of the Netherton-Turua Road was deferred for three months, HAURAKI PLAINS ROADS. The Public Works Department torwarded a copy of the proclamation taking land for portion of the PaeroaTahuna Road.

The Ptiblic Works Department offered the,- Council the expenditure of a grant for portion of the Paeroa-Tahuna Road, and on Mr Strange's motion it was decided to agree to spend the grant. The department also offered to give the Council the spending of a grant of for the Kaihere Road, and the Council agreed to spend the grant. MAUKORO LANDING ROAD. H. Hobday wrote regarding the delay in having the Maukoro Landing Road formed. The Chairman said nothing could be done until a reply was received from the Public Works Department. Consideration of the matter was deferred. • OLD TAURANGA ROAD. A letter was received from George McClashen, asking for repairs to be made irom the Tauranga Road to Waimata. On Mr Corbett's.motion, the engineer was' instructed to report on the matter. ALEXANDER'S DRAIN.

A, Gubb, Hikutaia, wrote asking that Alexander's drain be cleared out, and suggested that portion ot the Kaimanawa special rating area loan might be spent on this drain. In reply to Mr Corbett, the engineer said money for this drain could be taken out of the loan money. The loan money would be in hand before any payments would require to be made. On Mr Lloyd's motion, it was decided to have the drain cleared out, the cost to come out of the loan mpney. DRAIN AT NETHERTON. i Fisher Bros, and others asked for the drain on the Netherton-Kerepeehi Road to be cleared out. The Chairman said there was a grant for this road, and the Couucil proposed spending portion of the grant in clearing out the drain. ROADS, LEGALISED AND OTHERWISE. The County solicitor wrote suggesting that the Council obtain a plan from the Survey Department, showing the roads that had been properly taken, at a cost of ;£io tor the plan. On the motion of Mr Nathan, it was decided that the plan be obtained. PAEROA-TE AROHA ROAD. The County solicitor (Mr T. A. Moresby), wrote stating that the new road to Messina's property had been taken and the old road closed. All that remained to be done now was to have the road fenced.

In reply to a question, the Chairman said the Council had not agreed to fence the voad. He would speak to the solicitor about the matter. The County solicitor advised that the Mangatti Road deviation and the road to Piraurah! had also been gazetted, and the only matter to be settled was the question of compensation. It was stated that the Council had decided not to pay compensation. ' The Chairman was authorised to interview the solicitor on the matter. A PECULIAR COMPLAINT. Martin Rohan complained of Bush Street, Waikino, being cut down, as he considered it a " wilful waste of money." Mr Franklin said that for years he had been asked to get this work clone, and now there was a complaint. The engineer explained that it was necessary to cut the road down so as to grade it. The letter was " received." QUARRY AT TIROHIA. A letter was received from the Piako County Council, suggesting that a committee be appointed to meet representatives of Piako County Council to discuss the matter of the two local bodies purchasing a quarry at Tirohia.

On Mr Corbett's motion, it was decided to reply that the Council does not require a quarry in that locality at present. FINANCE COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The report of the finance committee showed the overdraft to be ,£8731 3s Sd; total indebtedness, 3s "8d; receipts last month, ,£l3lß ; contract lia-

bilities outstanding, Bs, of which ,£584 5s was included in the accounts tor payment; and the accounts for payment totalled ,£1206 ss, ot which amount £427 15s would be recoverable from Government.

The Paeroa Water Supply Account showed a credit balance of .£483 13s •rid ; receipts last month amounted to ,£92 10s iod; and accounts amounting to ,£9 4s lid were passed for payment.

The credit balance to the Paeroa Cemetery Account amounted to £7 15s 2d ; receipts last month, £2 6s 6d ; and the accounts for payment amounted to £2 16s 6d. OTHER MATTERS. Letters were received from the Minister foi Mines, stating that the Council's applications for special grants for the Mill Road and for the Karangahake Bridge Road would receive consideration. J. Brenan asked for the Council to make a road to his house in King Street, Paeroa, and offered to do portion of the work. It was decided that the work be carried out.

An application by A. M. Scobie for a bridge on Whangamata Road was referred to the engineer for a report.

T. C. Hills complained of the state of Mangawhera Road, stating that trees were laying on the road. The matter was left to the engineer to attend to.

j Spencer and party were granted an extension ot time for carrying out their contract at Netherton. The contract for work on the Wai-kaka-Waitakaruru Road was asked to be transferred from T. Lupes to Piako Contracting Company. On Mr Nathan's motion, it was decided that Lupes have permission to transfer his contract to whoever he likes, but that the Council will hold him responsible until the contract is completed. •. The Royal Insurance Company stated that they had paid the sum of ,£2O as an ex gratia payment to the relatives ot the young man Bolton in full payment of all claims. Application was made by H. Bush tor the water to be laid on to Nahum Street, Paeroa. W. Cullen wrote askin«g for the water to be laid to Coronation Street, and offering to pay ,-£25 towards the cost. Both matters were referred to the Paeroa Water Supply Committee. On Mr Lloyd's motion, it was decided that the next street lamp to be erected be a Lux light. It was decided, on the motion of Mr P'ranklin, that a tew bad places on the Waitawheta Road be repaired. A formal resolution was passed authorising the signing and sealing of the debentures for the loan for the Kaimanawa special rating district. A resolution was also passed authorising the signing of the agreement regarding the taking ot a road through Fitzgerald's property.
