CUTTING UP LAND.

ROAD TO BE FORMED.

A block of land in the vicinity of the Puke portion of Paeroa is being cut up into building sites by Mr W. M. Cullen, and a road through the block is to be formed and metalled. This work will be carried out by the County Council Mr Cullen paying the cost. In connection with this matter, the following letter from Mr Cullen was read at yesterday's meeting of the County Council :

—" I understand your engineer estimates the cost of the formation and metalling of Coronation Street from Hill Street to the point indicated on the plan and the ground at 14s gd. I, therefore beg to enclose herein cheque tor that amount. I presume now that the Council has the money in hand the work will be put in hand forthwith, as it is a matter of considerable importance to me and to the district generally ,that this portion of the town should be settled as soon as possible. I will forward to your Council the deed of dedication of the" land as a public road very shortly for your Council's approval." Tenders for the work of forming and metalling this street were received at yesterday's meeting of the Council, the only tenderers being G. Carrick at £191, and P. Treanor at ,£199 7s.

As the amount of the lowest tender was greater than the amount paid into the Council by Mr Cullen for the work, no tender was accepted.

The engineer (Mr Bray) expressed the opinion that the work was not worth the amount of the lowest tender.

On the motion of Mr Corbett, it was decided to refer the tenders to Mr

Cullen, the understanding being that it Mr Cullen liked to pay the difference between the amount he had paid in and the amount of the Jowest tender the tender would be accepted.
