ROAD AT KARANGAHAKE.

AN IMPORTANT HIGHWAY

At the meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council yesterday afternoon the following letter from Mr D. Waddell, local secretary of the New Zealand Crown Mines Co., Ltd., of Karangahake, was read :—" We have again to call the attention of your Council to the impassable state of the Hill Road, from Talisman No. 8 level to Crown Point, and to request that it be put into a fit state to carry waggon traffic at the earliest possible date. We have for some time past had the greatest difficulty in inducing teamsters to undertake the haulage of timber and other materials over this road, and as it is, at present, the only means of access to the upper workings of our mine we trust your Council will recognise the necessity of putting the work in hand at once."

Mr Marrinan moved that the engineer be instructed to carry out the work

asked for.

Mr Corbett said the road was in a very bad state, and some of the bends were exceedingly dangerous.

The engineer said that .£3O or £40 would improve the road considerably.

Mr Nathan moved, as an amendment, that the'engmeer report on the matter at

next meeting.

The Chairman (Mr Grace) said that if the Crown Company could not use this road they might have to reduce hands. The company was contributing revenue to the Council, and its road should be kept in repair.

It was decided that the engineer be

empowered to put two men on for a month to repair the road.
