MEETING OF SETTLERS

[ Orchard (Piako), April 21. v A general meeting of settlers of the

Hauraki Plains called for 23rd was, in spite of the bad weather and worse roads, well attended, and great interest vvas shown in the items set down for discussion, etc., namely, (1) Electing a committee representative of the district (Hauraki Plains) ; (2) Ways and means of initiating the dairying industry in the district; (3) To decide the issue—home separation and skimming stations, resulted in Messrs Abbott, Dalgetty, senr., Paul, H. Pratt, Lindsay, Scott, and Harris being elected members of the committee, with power to meet the directors of the Thames Valley Dairy Company in connection with the disposal of cream. it was proposed and carried unanimously, " That home separation be the principle adopted.''

A guarantee of 100 cows was forthcoming from those present at the meeting, and with other returns to come in. It is confidently expected that about 300 cows will form the nucleus of an industry in a district capable of enormous expansion in the near future.
