SUCCESSFUL EVENT FINE DISPLAY OF STOCK HORSE AND PONY SECTIONS Special to the Daily Times INVERCARGILL, Dec. 10. ’ Perfect weather and another outstanding display of . stock made people’s day at the Southland metropolitan show to-day a successful day, and although the exclusion of children as a precaution against an outbreak of infantile paralysis undoubtedly affected the attendance, the crowd was a big one. The show was officially opened by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Cullen. _ The main horse and pony sections were judged to-day and during the afternoon a big programme of competitions was completed. This' programme included the South Island Championship Jump which was open to all , owners and horses in the Dominion. A high standard was reached in the competitions. Clydesdale Section Pleases A feature of the horse sections today was the big entry of Clydesdales. With 12 entries in the dry mare class the show set a record for New Zealand in recent years. At the Otago metropolitan show recently there were nine horses, entered in this class, this being the previous highest entry at summer shows this year. -The judge of this section, Mr John Ewan, of ,Invercqrgill, expressed delight at the revival of the Clydesdale show horses. The competition was particularly strong in the female classes and the champion mare, J. A. Lindsay’s (Wright’s Bush) Melrose Dorothy, which has won at several Southland shows this season, triumphed because of the quality of her bone and her perfect movements. The Middlemarch exhibitor, A. Carruthers, paraded the reserve champion mare in Nether ton Lucinda and the reserve champion entry in Sunlight. The champion entry was J. S. Anderson’s (Waimatuku) Mac’s Crest, wihnfer of the championship ribbon for entries at every show on the Southland circuit this season. Mr Carruthers’s exhibits won several of the class awards. He also secured the Mackinnon Medal awarded to the exhibitor bringing forward his entries in the best show condition. Saddle Horses Southland horses had a good innings m the saddle horse section, the docked championship and reserve championship, and the reserve championship undocked ribbons being secured by Southland exhibitors. A Christchurch horse, H. R. Williams’s Campbell, was the champion undocked horse. L. Johnston’s (Waikaka Valley) Count took the reserve champion award in this class. The champion docked horse was exhibited by W. R. Downie (Riversdale), his representative being Lady Dale, and • Mrs H. Philpott’s (Invercargill) Melody was the reserve champion. In the classes wins were recorded by Miss K. Wood. (Beaumont) and F. Blackie (Mosgiel), and J. Trotter (Kurow) took some 'minor placings. The display of. light horses was an impressive one; and there was plenty of good competition. The Milton exhibitors, Alison Brothers, secured the championship for the docked pony in section A, and T. Fox (Dunedin) won a class. A. Fox’s (Dunedin) Gaiety was the champion docked pony in section B. The champion pony stallion was exhibited by W. N. Kane (Tapanui) in Florlan. High Jumping Standard A particularly high standard was set in the jumping competitions, which provided the main interest for the crowd during the afternoon. Tlve South Island championship was won by R. A. Dodds’s (Knapdale) Paddy, W. S. Wayte’s (Otamita) Wymmering and Full Flight being second and third in that order. The first event, the women’s championship jump, was also won by Full Flight, A. J. Dodds’s (Te Tipua) Dandy being second and D. F. O’Conners (Dunedin) Viking third. R. Dodds’s Dandy won the best type of 11-stone, hunter event from W. S. Wayte’s Wymmering and A. Oliver's (Benmore) Urukehu. H. R. Williams’s (Christchurch) Campbell won the best type of weight-carrying hunter event from W. Wayte’s Full Flight. Otago was represented in the South Island event by F. Blackie’s (Mosgiel) Quiver, D. :F. O’Connell’s Viking and J. Trotter’s (Kurow) Lincoln Lad.
