AIR FREIGHTS
SURVEY OF POSITION CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DISCUSSION At the monthly meeting of the Council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce yesterday there was a short discussion on the question of air freight to and from Dunedin. A letter from National Airways Corporation was received stating that an officer of the corporation would be in Dunedin in the near future to make a survey of the position. The executive had reported that a number of firms, in response to a letter from the chamber, had intimated their desire to discuss the matter with the officer. , The president, Mr A. C. Stephens, who was in the chair, commented that there was no doubt that the freight service would be well patronised. The chamber would do everything to assist the officer of the corporation when he visited Dunedin. Mr W. J. Winefield said the whole question was bound up with costs. They should obtain all the information they could on costs to present to the corporation’s officer. It was decided to write to the Airways Corporation asking when the officer would visit Dunedin. It was also decided to obtain information concerning freight charges, and also take up "the question of having an extra machine during February and March next. Central Air Service The executive reported that a summary of replies received from persons and bodies in Central Otago concerning the proposed air service indicated that a service for both passengers and freight would be well supported, particularly during the months of tourist traffic. “ There is certainly a great need for such a service, but the only question is, when will it be established? ” commented the chairman. Delays at Aerodrome The executive reported that in response to a letter from Mr H. Worrall, Director of National Airways, with whom the question of delays at Taieri aerodrome had been taken up some time ago, a reply was sent stating that the present arrangement was working quite satisfactorily, and that delays at the aerodrome were not excessive.—Received. Cargo Control Committees “Work seems to be going on quite satisfactorily throughout the Dominion,” commented the cahirman, when the question of cargo control committees was under discussion. The executive reported that certain cargo control committees had been set up at northern centres, but the opinion of a meeting conveyed by the Otago Importers and Shippers’ Association held on December 3, and attended by manufacturing and importing interests, was that a direct approach should be made to the commercial community, and thus obviate the necessity for a control committee.—Adopted. The next meeting of the council was fixed for Tuesday, February 17, 1948. Those present at the meeting were Messrs Stephens (chairman), A. B. Callender, M. S. Arthur, W. S- Dawson, A. E. Gardner, R. H. Gardner. E. Hartle, F. A. Keane, W. G. Nicolson, A. de Beer, Winefield, R. S. McKenzie, J. P. S. Orr, W. Patrick, H. Staton, L. G. Wood, J. L. .Johnston, R. J. Knowles, and S. G. Cook.
