LOSS OF PRODUCTION
KAITANGATA COAL MINES MEN NOT RESPONSIBLE . The manager of the Kaitangata Coal Company, Ltd., Mr J. G. Henderson, in a statement to the Daily Times yesterday, denied that production at the mines was lost on Friday last because the day shift men were willing to work only half a day. “ The reason for the loss of production was the shortage of wagons,” he said. “ Had wagons been available, ' the men would have worked. They were willing and even anxious to do so, but the company sent the morning shift home because there were no wagons. The afternoon shift was not started by the company for the same reason.”
A message from Balclutha published yesterday stated: “ Production was lost at Kaitangata coal mines on Friday because the day shift men were willing to work only half a day, the afternoon shift being totally lost. Shortage of wagons was given as the reason. The open-cast mine and other smaller mines in the district also suffered, and the loss in production was considerable.”
