OTAGO SUCCESSES

SOUTHLAND SHOW PROVINCE WELL REPRESENTED CHAMPION BULL TO MILTON BREEDER Special to the Daily Times INVERCARGILL, Dec. 9. Otago was well represented at the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s eighty-first annual show which opened at the Invercargill Show Grounds to-day in perfect weather, and exhibitors from this province took their fair share of the awards. Cattle, sheep, harness horses and ponies, and nigs were judged to-day. To-morrow the Clydesdales and working draughts, thoroughbreds, trotters am} pacers, saddle horses and ponies will be paraded. Unfortunate from the point of view of the association and the children concerned, the restrictions placed on the movements of children in an effort to guard against an outbreak of infantile paralysis will have an effect on to-morrow’s attendance at tbe show. There has been a revival of interest in agricultural shows in the Southland show cricuit this season and if conditions had been normal prospects would have been good for a record crowd to-morrow, which is People’s Day. The association has deleted the age limit in classes where ponies had to be ridden by boys and girls under 16. Cattle The marked increase in the entries in the cattle section was one of the outstanding points of the show to-day. These entries were regarded as more than satisfactory and they resulted in ‘some excellent competition. Jerseys had the best representation. M. and R. Cleaver (Milton) ~ exhibited the champion bull in Waikari Kaka, the reserve champion, Roseland Desires Baron, being paraded by the Oamaru breeders, Portis Brothers. In the Jersey Oaks Competition, which attracted 27 entries, J. Hellyer’s (NorthEast Harbour) Tokorangi Rosemary was placed fifth. The winner of the Oaks was an exhibit paraded by A. C. Gray (Wallacetown). Portis Brothers and J. Hellyer took several of the class placings. The Palmerston breeder, P. Walker, collected several of the minor awards in the Ayrshire section. Andrew Carruthers (Middlemarch) secured the reserve champion award with his bull, Netherton Acme, in the Aberdeen Angus section, being runner-up to W. J. Hillis (Seaward Downs) and A. Struthers and Sons (Mosgiel), exhibited the reserve champion cow, Silverside Bonny Lass, in the milking Shorthorn section and took several of the class awards. Sheep The sheep sections produced many good-quality exhibits, the full range of breeds usually seen at Southland shows being catered for. In the Border Leicesters the well-known breeders J. A. Edwards (Otikerama) and Kennedy Bros. (Bayswater) shared the major honours, Kennedy Bros, taking the awards for rams and Edwards the awards for ewes. The estate of D. Robertson (Waikokoi) had another good innings in the Romney Marsh section, taking the champion and reserve champion ram awards and the champion ewe award in the open classes. The estate also exhibited the champion and reserve champion rams and the reserve champion ewe in the natural-condition classes. The Milton breeder, G. C. A. Wray, who was successful in the Ryeland section at Gore, exhibited the champion Ryeland ram and the champion ewe. This was a small section. Southland exhibitors dominated the Southdown section. C. T. Lowery (Milton) took some of the minor awards for Dorset Horns. The crossbred sheep section was a strong one, some of the more prominent exhibitors including F. Chittock (Kelso), M. A. Holgate (Balclutha), and T. Burnside (Balclutha). » F. Chittock also had a good entry of fat sheep forward. Horses The champion harness horse, Adorian, owned and exhibited by the Timaru enthusiast, C. S. Elmes, added still another championship to its list of successes. This horse has taken championships throughout the South Island this season. Elms also exhibited the champion harness pony in Kismet. R. Fox (Dunedin) secured the reserve championship award. Many outside competitors took part in the jumping competitions to-day. Fraser Blackie’s (Mosgiel) Quiver won the best jumper event from a field of 22. D- F. O’Connell’s (Dunedin) Viking being second in this event. Viking also won the best jumper to be ridden by a woman. Twenty competitors took part in this event, the other placings being secured by Miss J. Horne’s (Ferndale) Sparkling Lad and W. Wayte’s (Otamita) Full Flight. Members of the Eastern Southland Hunt Club scooped the pool in the best hunter competition, this event being won by W. Wayte’s Full Flight. A. J. Dodds (Te Tipua) secured second and third with his horses Dandy and Sylvia’s Effort. The main event tomorrow, the South Island Championship Jump, has attracted a field of 16. Otago will be represented by F. Blackie’s Quiver, D. F. O'Connell’s Viking and J. Trotter’s (Kurow) Lincoln Lad.
