GARRISON BAND SOLOS

E. Hesselgrave’s Success The Oamaru Garrison Band held its annual solo competitions on Monday night E. Hesselgrave, on the soprano cornet, won both the McCallum Cup for melody solo and the Robertson Cup for variation solo. M. T'horby, playing the cornet won the intermediate variation and melody solos, and the St. Moir Comedy Company Cup for the Intermediate aggregate. The Rev. D. H. Stewart, who was the judge, said that the first thing to be cultivated in brass playing was a sweet and pleasant tone. Notes had to be produced sweetly and clearly, and to master this, players should practice intervals and scales. Results were:— St. Moir Comedy Company Cup (intermediate) ; Melody solo, M. Thorby (cornet), 76 points, 1; J. Hesselgrave (B flat bass), 70, 2; S. Davies (cornet), 61, 3. Variation solo, M. Thorby, 64 points, 1| J Hesselgrave, 63, 2; S. Davies, 62. 3 McCallum Cup (senior): Melody solo. E Hesselgrave (soprano cornet), 87 points, 1; S. Pheloung (cornet), 79, 2; G. Ovens (euphonium). 78, 3. Robertson Cup (senior): Variation solo, E. Hesselgrave, 93 points, 1; S. Pheloung, 85, 2; G. Ovens, 80, 3. Mrs W. Stevenson presented Mr Stevenson’s gold medal, won by E. Hesselgrave, and Mrs W. Davis presented the cups. Mr A. Nuttall, on behalf of the contestants, thanked Mr Stewart for judging the competitions.
