SEA FLOWER PLEASES
SOUTHLAND TRAINING FOR TAPANUI Special to the Daily Times. INVERCARGILL, Dec. 9. ’ Horses with engagements at the Tapanui meeting on Saturday provided interest in training operations at Invercargill this morning. Perfect weather favoured the work and the course proper, with the poles 30ft out was in firm order. Sea Flower impressed by the manner in which she finished on terms with Black Light at the end of a mile in lmin 52sec. There was little pace on over the first half but they ran the last four in 53sec and did it well. Benbecula finished clear of Absentee t over seven furlongs, the last six in lmin* 20 2-ssec, and the last in 53 4-ssec. Sir Garnish and Wild Cry took lmin 51sec for the last mile of a mile and a-quarter, the last half in 57 2-ssec. They were eased over the last two furlongs. Wild-, Cry has two engagements at Tapanui on Saturday. A rider has been engaged for him in the open mile but because of the small field in the Tapanui Handicap he may contest the mile and a-quarter in preference. Effervesence finished clear of Great Desire over five furlongs in lmin 4 4-5 sec, the last half in 52 2-ssec. This represented a useful effort. Lady Marylin and Shadamai were too good for Matin over a half a mile in 51 4-ssec, running the first two in 25 l-ssec. On her own Bonny Royal took lmin 21sec for six, the last half in 55sec. Geisha Girl was under a good hold in completing a similar task in lmin 22 2-ssec, the last four in 56sec. C. -T. Wilson has been approached to ride her in the Dwyer Memorial. . Doulton and Haughty Dick reeled off half a mile in 53 4-ssec, the first two in 26 3-ssec. Great Coon ran an easy five in lmin Bsec, the last four in 55sec. Defendant, who is now in T. E Pankhurst’s team, sprinted half a mile with Winger in 52 3-ssec. It was a good effort on Defendant's part as she lost a couple of lengths when they jumped away.
Invest, a recent addition to T. E. Pankhurst’s team, did pace work on the plough. She is an unusually big three-year-old filly by Beaulivre from a fine race mare in Golden Blonde. She was bought primarily with the idea of being bred from.
Wantwood, who was suffering, from a slight touch of colic last week-end, has made a good recovery since he returned home. Gipsy Major is on the injured list and may be off the scene for a few weeks.
