MOTION LOST
CLOSING OF PORT CHALMERS JUNIOR LIBRARY
Whether the 1 junior library at Port Chalmers should be closed during the infantile paralysis epidemic was discussed by the Borough Council last night, but a motion to that effect was lost.
The headmaster of the Port Chalmers School, Mr A. C. Notman, who is a co-opted member of the council’s Library Committee, said that it was a question for decision by the council, but in his opinion there was little danger if the library was open for children.
Cr H. Williamson disagreed with this advice, saying that no precautions to counter the malady were too extreme, and the library should be closed to stop any congregation of children. Cr Reeves ..contended that depriving children of books would have a detrimental psychological effect on them She could not see what harm could accrue from keeping the library open. After other councillors had spoken, a motion to the effect that the library should be closed was lost.
