RADIO-ACTIVE METALS
PRODUCTION BY GERMAN SCIENTISTS AMERICAN OFFICIALS’ SEIZURE BERLIN, Dec. 5. A high American Military Government official said there was strong evidence that German scientists were producing for “one of the occupying Powers ” large quantities of mesothorium —a radio-active metal mainly used in nuclear fission and the manufacture of atomic bombs. The official said the Americans carried out a raid against black marketeers, in which they seized 60 milligrams of mesothorium, 60 milligrams of radium, and arrested 20 Germans and one Dutchman.
