BAN ON CAROLS

INVESTIGATION ORDERED BY MAYOR Rec. 8 p.m. NEW YORK, Dec. 5. As a result of the ban of some Christmas carols in 23 New York schools yesterday by the assistant superintendent of Schools, Dr Isaac Bildersee, the Mayor, Mr William O’Dwyer, to-day ordered an, investigation of the action. Mr Andrew Clausen, junior president of the New York Board of Education, and Mr William Jansen, Superintendent of Schools, held a hurried conference after. Mr O’Dwyer ordered the investigation. Mr Clausen said that Dr Bildersee’s order would not be rescinded, but the nature of Christmas programmes in each school would be left to the discretion of its principal. Teachers would be reminded of the procedure followed in recent years. This appeared to remove Dr Bildersee’s ban on singing such carols as “ Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,” and “ Holy Night,” in the 23 schools under his jurisdiction, which have 30,000 pupils.
