Precautionary Measure for South Island

SPREAD OF EPIDEMIC Restrictions on Travel Likely Because of the infantile paralysis epidemic in the north, all schools in the South Island, primary and secondary, public and private, are to be closed. This was announced to the Daily Times last night by the Director-general of Health, Dr T. R. Ritchie, by long-distance telephone. Dr Ritchie added that steps will be taken in the various health districts in the South Island to restrict the attendance of children under 16 years at all public gatherings. He emphasised that the decision to close the schools does not affect University examinations which are at present in progress.

The Minister of Health, Miss Mabel Howard, speaking to the Daily Times from Christchurch, stated that the Department of Health was taking the utmost precautions to control the epidemic. She added that in the coming week consideration would be given to the question of how far further steps could be taken to restrict the movements of the public, who might be carriers of the disease.
