OBITUARY

.. MR GEORGE SCOTT The death during the pakt week of Mr George Scott has removed from Dunedin business circles a figure which has been both well-known and highly-esteemed in Dunedin for almost 50 years. Born in Dunedin in 1878, and educated at the Union Street School, of which he was dux in 1891, Mr Scott joined the staff of McFarlane and Co., grocers, then established in Maclaggan street, and later became manager of the Christchurch branch of Wardells, Ltd. In 1906, in association with his brother, a well-known Dunedin carver, Mr Scott founded the firm of J. Scott and Co., Ltd., timber and plywood importers, carvers and turners, with premises in King street. At the conclusion of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition in 1925 Mr Scott purchased the Exhibition buildings and achieved their successful demolition. For many years Mr Scott took a leading part in the affairs of the Masonic Lodge, and was for some time a trustee of the Methodist Central Mission. He was a foundation member of the Moana Tennis Club. Mr Scott is survived by his wife, one son and one daughter.
