RUMOUR REFUTED
DISEASE IN OAMARU DEPARTMENTAL DENIAL Special to the Daily Times OAMARU, Dec. 5. “ There is no case of poliomyelitis in the Oamaru district,” Dr McLeod, of the Health Department, Timaru, told the Otago Daily Times representative at Oamaru this afternoon, in reply to an inquiry concerning a rumour current in the town that there was a suspected case in Oamaru. “It must be understood from time to time when an epidemic is in progress in other parts of the country,” Dr McLeod continued, “ that suspected cases will be treated with caution. That is natural and correct, but the public may rest assured that there is no case in our district.” Dr McLeod’s statement will ease the anxiety of residents of the town caused by the fairly widely-spread rumour about a suspected case. As a precaution, children under 16 years of age will not be permitted to visit the Oamaru Public Hospital, and parents and guardians only will be allowed to visit the children’s ward.
