POWER FAILURE

THEATRE IN DARKNESS PERFORMANCE ABANDONED During the performance of “ Sigrid,” one of the ballets on the programme presented by the Borovansky Company at His Majesty’s Theatre last night, the theatre was suddenly plunged into darkness, and for more than threequarters of an hour the audience waited patiently in expectation that the lighting would be restored. The lights failed about 9.35, and a quarter of an hour later ■ an announcement was made from the stage that the Electricity Department had hoped that the power would be restored within a reasonable time. Some time later the audience was disappointed to hear that there appeared to be no immediate prospect of the fault being located, and the management announced that patrons on leaving the theatre would be given tickets which would entitle them to admission at either the matinee or evening performance to-day. This is not the first time that a theatrical performance has had to be abandoned in Dunedin because of a failure of the electric power. In 1930, during the Gilbert and Sullivan season, a performance was stopped because of a fault developing in the circuit supplying the theatre. )
