BANNED IN SCHOOLS
CAROLS OF RELIGIOUS SIGNIFICANCE NEW YORK OFFICIAL’S ORDER Rec 10 p.m. NEV," YORK, Dec. 4. An assistant superintendent of schools to-day banned the Singing of Christmas carols making reference to the Nativity and celebrations having “religious significance” in 23 New York schools. Explaining the order the official said: “ Personal jollity and merrymaking ” are fine for children of public schools, but the religious features of the day should be eliminated. It should not have any sectarian or religious significance. The official, who is of Jewish faith, emphasised that the order applied only to carols of religious significance. The order was issued, he said, because songs of Christian significance and Jewish significance have been sung in schools in recent years and have given offence to those of the opposite faith.
