LEVY ON BOOKMAKERS

SYDNEY RACE CLUB’S PLANS SYDNEY, Dec. 5. The race clubs have imposed a 1 per cent, turnover levy on all Sydney bookmakers from January 1. The levy is expected to yield about £337,000 a year, of which about half will go to the State Government in taxation. The share taken by the Australian Jockey Club and the Sydney Turf Club will be put back into racing to increase prize money and effect major improvements. Both bodies have agreed to alter their by-laws to empower them to impose a levy of not more than 2 per cent, in addition to the present bookmakers' licence fees. The tax will affect 379 .bookmakers, who estimate that the decision would cost the bigger fielders about £3OO each per meeting, They allege that the tax, which would have to be passed on to punters, would encourage off-course and startingprice betting.
