AREAS UNDER CROP

OFFICIAL ESTIMATES P.A. WELLINGTON, Dec. 4. Estimates compiled by the Census and Statistics Department of the areas under wheat, oats, barley and potatoes for the season 1947-48 are given in a Gazette notice published to-day. The estimates are: North Island—Wheat, 5500 oats, 17,000; barley, 8000. South Island—Wheat, 122,000 acres; oats, 171,000; barley, 76,000. Potatoes—North Island, 5800 acres; South Island, 13,500; total, 19,300 acres. The notice also contains the final areas in the same four crops for the year 194647. The figures are—For threshing: Wheat, 141,407 acres; oats, 55,297;' barley, 53,041. For chaffing: Wheat, 828 acres; oats, 76,405; barley, 733; total harvested, 142,235, 131,702 53,774. Not harvested (fed off, etc.): 1771 acres, 47J67, 9071; grand totals, 144,006, 181,469, 62,845. Potatoes—North Island: 6433 acres; South Island. 12,843 acres; total, 19,267 acres.
