AMATEUR ATHLETICS

With the beginning of athletic meetings in the evenings, more interest will be shown in ‘training work, but the weekly competitions will require much better organisation, more officials, and a prompt start at 6.30 p.m. Last week there was a decided lack of competition, but with the return of M. Gardiner and the addition of promising new members such as G. Ussher, D. O'Connell and I. Todd this should soon be rectified. It is unfortunate that I. Gardiner cannot obtain any strong opposition in the senior discus and shot events, as this would supply the necessary stimulus to improved efforts. His performances at present are commendable. Further evening meetings before the holidays will be held on December 4,9, and 18. Trophies, badges, and certificates won during last season will be presented at the meeting to-night. An amateur athletic coaching school will be conducted by the South Canterbury Sub-centre from December 26 to January 3. This is certainly a ™ ov e * n the right direction to improve the technique in various events. Th e sri}®® 1 will be open to all amateur athletes and coaches. During this Period, there will be opportunities for those attending to compete in amateur events at sports meetings to be conducted by Waimate. St. Andrews and South Canterbury Caledonian Societies
