SUCCESSFUL SEASON
COMMUNITY SINGING FOOD FOR BRITAIN APPEAL A short, but successful, community sing season was brought to a close in the Main Town Hall last night when a large audience enjoyed singing old and new favourites and listening to the musical items provided. With contributions made last night, as well as promises received, the committee’s “ Food for Britain ” appeal will benefit further by £2BO. Since November, 1945, when the Dunedin branch of the National Council of Women had taken charge of the money raised by the Community Sing Committee to forward suitable foodstuffs to the Ministry of Food >n London for distribution to those in need, £2844 2s 5d had been received from the committee, said Miss Wood, secretary of the National Council of Women. Commodities most useful to the people of Britain had been purchased and they were now awaiting shipping space for the next shipment. "In all, 950 cases weighing approximately 25 tons, have gone to London,’’ said Miss Wood. “ When you remember that there are' from three to four dozen tins in each case—making about 45,000 tins—it can be seen that the community sing's effort is a worthwhile one, and does gladden the heart of many a harassed mother, wife, old-age pensioner, and needy souls—to say nothing of the many orphanages, homes, hospitals, etc., which have been helped. Another 250 cases, weighing approximately six tons and numbering about 8000 tins, is now awaiting shipment. It has sometimes been difficult to procure in quantity the most suitable foodstuffs and I am grateful to those firms which have helped me to fill these shipments.” The speaker paid a tribute to the generosity of the people of Otago. A number of valuable articles were sold at last night's sing. A puppy was sold for 25gns, while an ivory miniature and lace d'oyley realised £lO. The leader was Mr H. P. Desmoulins, who was assisted by Mr J. F. Himburg, arid the accompanist was Mr A. H. Pettitt. The chairman of the Community Sing Committee, Mr W. R. Sinclair, made a presentation to Mrs Mclntyre, who for many years had been in charge of the stall.
A musical programme was presented by the Dunedin Ladies’ Brass Band, Ravensbourne Ladies’ Choir, Miss Shirley Le’ Gal (songs), and Misses Moyra Meenan and Eileen Keenan (cornet duets), and Messrs J. L. Deans Ritchie and E. Ottrey (vocal duets).
