GORE SHOW
OTAGO SUCCESSES CLASSES FOR SHEEP HORSE AND CATTLE JUDGING TO-DAY Special to the’ Daily Times INVERCARGILL, Dec. 2. Only a few Otago breeders were represented on the first day of the Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Association's sixty-sixth annual show to-day, but those who did have stock on display made their presence felt. The sheep occupied the main attention of the judges during the day and in that section the fuil range of breeds usually exhibited at Southland and Otago shows was covered satisfactorily. In all respects the display was a good one. Otago will be well represented in the cattle and horse sections, and in the competitions to-morrow. The Kelso breeder, F. H. Chittock, took most of the first awards in a particularly strong crossbred section. It was one of the best displays of crossbreds seen at Gore for many years and Mr Chittock’s stock met with keen competition. Indicative of the high standard attained by this breeder, however, was the fact that he secured the first awards in 9 of the 10 classes.
Ryelands from Milton C. G. A. Wray, of Milton took all the major awards in a small.Ryeland section. Ryelands have never provided a big section at the Gore show, but this year the Milton exhibitor had ;o contend with some competition. ,ast year he was the only entrant. The Jtikerama Border Leicester breeder, J. A. Edwards, produced the entire entry of Border Leicester's and in the Dorset Horn section, A. Edwards, of Dacre, was the only exhibitor.
It was in the Romney March and Southdown sections that the best competition was experienced. The wellknown Waikoikoi breeders, the estate of D. Robertson, who have taken awards at Otago and Southland shows for many years, were again to the fore in these sections. They secured the champion and reserve tickets for both tarns and ewes in the Romney section and exhibited the champion Southdown ram. The reserve champion ram was produced by G. G. Grieve, of Otahuti, who also exhibited the champion ewe. F. E. Holroyd, of Wright’s Bush, exhibited the reserve champion ewe.
Viking Placed Second
Dog trials and jumping events provided the main interest for the spectators during the day. Southland horses won all three jumping events. D. F. O’Connell’s (Dunedih) Viking finished second to W. Wayte’s (Otamita) Full Flight in a competition for horses that had followed the hounds. This event drew a big field of 26 competitors, and a high standard of jumping was attained. E. H. Aubrey’s (Oamaru) Granite, one of the last horses to make his run, did not jump as well as usual, and was not placed. Cattle and horses will be judged tomorrow, and there will be a big programme of competitions. Otago will be represented in the cattle section by several exhibitors, including J. F. Bisset, of Kaitangata, who has a good entry of Ayrshires forward. Prominent in the show ring for many years, Miss K. Wood, of Beaumont, will have exhibits in the thoroughbred and hackney sections. Several other Otago exhibitors will compete in the light horse and pony sections. John Trotter’s (Kurow) Lincoln Lad, D. F. O’Connell’s Viking, Fraser Blackie’s (Mosgiel) Quiver, D- C. Aubrey’s (Wanaka) Rose and Florian, and E. H. Aubrey’s (Oamaru) Granite will be some of the Otago representatives in the jumping events.
The weather was overcast and pleasantly mild to-day, and the. day’s programme was completed without interruption. If to-morrow remains fine the prospects are good for a big attendance for People’S Day.
