HEAVY POLL EXPECTED

WESTLAND BY-ELECTION INTENSIVE CAMPAIGNING P.A. GREYMOUTH, Dec. 2. Present indications are that there will be a heavy poll for the Westland by-election to-morrow after comparatively short campaigns conducted by the two candidates, Mr J. B. Kent (Labour) and Mr J. F. Lockington (National), assisted by four Ministers, including Mr Fraser, on the one side, and five National members, including Mr Holland, on the other. There are prospects of a fine day, while the organisation of both sides has never been more intense in the history of Westland. The results from the 87 polling booths are not expected to be finally available before 11 p.m. owing to the scattered nature of the district, and difficulty is expected in securing results from remote places in South Westland. The results will be broadcast by the national stations.
