CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Monthly Meeting
Mr R. H. Watson presided at the monthly meeting of the Oamaru Chamber of Commerce on Monday night. Mr W. R. Williams was appointed to represent the chamber on the Immigration Welfare Committee.
It was decided to recommend that shops close on Thursday and Friday, December 25 and 26. and Thursday and Friday. January 1 and 2, and that 10 o’clock closing be observed on December 24, and 9 o’clock closing on December 31. Mr Willsteed said that he had noticed lately that cyclists were not observing the laws of the road, riding more than two abreast and riding on footpaths for long distances. It was decided to approach the Transport Department. The Associated Chambers advised that exemptions from deduction of income tax and assessment of income tax applied to tool and overall allowance to employees after November 30. Tributes to Mr H. Haj»
Tributes to the services of Mr H. Hay, secretary during the last 18 years, were paid by Messrs R. H. Watson, H. S. Stevens, and J, Meikle. His tact and congenial manner had been a tower of strength to the chamber, Mr Stevens said, and by his ability he had held the chamber together in difficult times. A welcome was extended to Mr Hay’s successor, Mr A. H. H. Pearce.
