HEAVY-WEIGHT BOXING
MULLETT RETAINS TITLE KNOCK-OUT IN FIRST ROUND p.A. WELLINGTON, Dec. 1. Little more half the first round sufficed for Don iVlullett to dispose of Martin Weir’s challenge for the heavyweight boxing title in the Wellington Town Hail to-night. During that short period, however, Mullet was seen right back to the form which won him the title. In speed and clean hitting it was a perfect right cross to the side of his face which sent Weir to the mat for the full count, 1 minute 47sec after the start of the round. Mullett weighed 14st 31b and Weir 13st 61b. During its short duration the bout, scheduled for 15 rounds, was contested at a surprising speed for such heavy men. Mullett attacked with both hands, and sent Weir down for a count of four. The latter was not hurt and unleashed a series of left rips to the body and head, which momentarily had Mullett in trouble. He cleverly weaved his way* out of danger, shook Weir with a left hook, and then connected with a perfectly timed right cross to win on a knock-out. In the amateur preliminaries P. Gallagher, who recently outpointed the 1946 amateur heavy-weight champion, J. Boyd, was beaten on points by A. E. Cook (Hawera) over six rounds. The latter’s display was full of promise.
