EXTENSIVE POWERS
DISTRICT MEDICAL OFFICERS P.A. WELLINGTON, Dec. 1. Commenting to-day on the infantile paralysis epidemic, the Minister of Health, Miss Howard, said authority had been given to the medical officer of health in every district to take steps wherever he thinks necessary under section 76 of the Health Act, in which powers are given to control the movements of people and to prevent any specified persons or class of persons from attending gatherings of
any type, either indoors or outdoors. The question of travel would be determined within the next few days, the Minister said. The closing of schools was, with the object of allowing all children to be under the direct supervision of their parents so that if they should develop any of the symptoms of the disease medical advice could be sought immediately. The Minister said that restrictions will immediately be placed upon all gatherings as soon as there is any evidence of the advisability of so doing.
