Soviet Again Seeks Closest Entente With Germany Against the West

Rec. 8.30 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 1. Mr Molotov has already made it clear that the Soviet Union intends to make the present Council of Foreign Ministers’ session a vehicle for presenting Russia as champion of a unified Germany, and the Western Allies as desiring to dismember her, says the Daily Herald’s political correspondent. The discussion at the meeting to-day is likely to be largely dominated by Mr Molotov’s insistent demand for a central German Government. The correspondent added that it becomes more and more plain that the Russians are using this Foreign Ministers’ Council session to persuade German nationalists that the Soviet Union is Germany’s champion and the Western Powers, Germany’s enemies. This Russian line is not surprising. It is simply a development of the old Soviet idea of a close entente with Germany against the west. It is a variation of the theme which inspired the Rapallo Treaty in 1922, the attempt to make friends with Hitler in 1933, and the Soviet-Nazi entente of 1939.
