FORCED LANDINGS
REVERSING ALL PROPELLORS PILOT’S TEST SUCCESSFUL Rec. 7.30 p.m. NEW YORK, Nov. 30. The pilot of a Douglas transport aircraft simultaneously reversed all four engines in the first test of “ backting up” an aeroplane in flight. Herbert Fischer, chief test pilot of the Curtiss-Wright Corporation, made the test at 12,000 feet when the aircraft was flying at 150 miles an hour. Fischer said reversing the propellers reduced the aircraft’s speed rapidly and demonstrated that this operation would facilitate forced landings. He added that reversing all propellers simultaneously had not been tried previously for fear that the aircraft would stall and crash.
