The well-known stallion Leighon dropped dead last week. He proved a prolific getter, and his services were in keen demand of recent years. He proved a valuable stud acquisition to New Zealand turf, several smart performers of his progeny having comprised Flying Tor, Sir Bradbury, Leigh Hark, Air Ace, Saxon Tor, Saint Tor, Killeymoon, Royal Tor, Black Robe and Copper Coin.

“ The Good Old Days” One of the few surviving original members of the Taieri Amateur Turf Club, which was one of the clubs that lost its permit when the number of permits was reduced in 1910, is Mr R. R. Green, who lives in retirement at Abbotsford, and in spite of his 82 years, still has vivid recollections of racing in the early days on the Taieri. On Friday of last week four other members of the Taieri Club .in its earliest days—Messrs J. S. Smeaton, P Sinclair, A. F. Quelch and A. Fleming—were entertained at the home of Mr Green and talked over the “ good old days.” Mr Green’s first association with racing was as clerk of the scales when races were held at North Taieri. He was then 17 years of age. “ Those were the days,” said Mr Green. 11 No motor cars, but people came from everywhere in traps and buggies and made the races a real picnic outing. I remember the Duke of Edinburgh driving out to one of our meetings, and that is how Duke s road was named.” Mr Green, who will be better known to racegoers of the present generation as the owner of Wingatui, Mariaine, Ruena, Moneybird and other gallopers, had much success as an owner, and one of his proudest possessions is a gold cup won by Wingatui in the Riverton Cup of 1927. The Taieri Club, after racing at North Taieri. transferred operations to Mosgiel Park, which is now used as a private training track by Mr D. P. Wilson Of Mr Green it can with eveiy reason be said that he is one of the " grand old men of the turf
