BOOK OF HONOUR
EMPIRE JOURNALISTS KILLED DURING WAR DEDICATION IN LONDON N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 28. A memorial in the shape of an illuminated Book of Honour has been created by the London Press Club to commemorate the 420 journalists and news photographers from Britain and the Empire who lost their lives on active service in the second world war. The book, which was officially unveiled this week by Admiral of the Fleet Lord Tovey, lists the fallen according to the countries from which they came. There are 32 names in the New Zealand section. . •The Memorial book is bound in blue leather bearing on the outside cover the crossed quills emblem of the Press Club. It. will rest in a specially illuminated bookcase in the club library, flanked by shelves of books written about the war by British and Commonwealth journalists. Set into the glass doors of the case is a section of octagonal stained glass retrieved from the shattered remnants of thd windows of the House of Commons when it' was destroyed during the blitz. Included in the book is also a list of names of 21 members of the club and members of its staff who lost their live£ on active service in the first •world war. , , Colonel J. J. Astor, president of the club, presided at the unveiling ceremony. The memorial was dedicated by the Bishop of London, Dr William Wand, and Lieutenant-colonel Sir lan Fraser, M.P., president of the British Legion, recited Bunyon’s valedictory lines to the fallen. After two buglers had sounded the Last Post and Reveille, Lord Tavey removed a Union Jack draping the bookcase. Paying tribute to those whom the book commemorated, Lord Tovey said that the journalists who served in the second world war were worthy of their great predecessors. List of New Zealanders
