“MYSTERY SHIP”
ARRIVAL AT AUCKLAND PANAMANIAN FLAG FLOWN P.A. AUCKLAND, Nov. 28. Italian manned and owned, and trading under the Panamanian flag, the steamer Tidewater, which arrived to-day, carried people of 14 nationalities on the voyage from Marseilles via Sfax, North Africa. India, and Australia. Passengers said the vessel was known as the mystery ship before she reached Australia. Shipping officials there apparently knew little about the ship until she arrived with a full passenger list, including Jewish immigrants. The 250 passengers who arrived in the vessel to-day were mostly from Australia. The master of the Tidewater, Captain Mario Palmonella, an Italian, said the ship was owned by the Tidewater Commercial Company, Baltimore, United States, and traded under the Panamanian flag “ for political reasons.”
