DEMAND FOR OATS
LITTLE HELD IN STORES The weather during the past week has been warm and dry, and a good fall of rain would be of immense benefit to all crops and would stimulate the growth of pastures. Excellent progress nas been made with work for the season, and most crops have been brought in under ideal conditions. Offerings of cereal crops from the country are now finished, but the arrival of the Inchwells from Melbourne has helped to solve the problem for a time. It is to be hoped that sufficient grain is now being held to meet all requirements until the new crop comes in. There 'is a strong demand from the North Island for oats of all descriptions, but there are practically no lines held in store in Dunedin, and consequently no business is being done. Supplies of chaff are sufficient for requirements, and good bright quality remains firm at recent rates. Large areas of peas, botli garden and field, are being sown in Otago this year. They have made a good start, and with favourable weather during the rest of the growing season, returns should be highly profitable to producers. . The overseas market for small seeds is still poor 1 with only isolated inquiries for white clover, brown top. Chewing’s fescue, and certified ryegrass, and this has had the effect of holding the market momentarily at prices ruling last week Montgomery red' clover and crested dogstail are meeting with very little inquiry, but cocksfoot, at last, is being inquired for, although prices are low and tests high.
