HOLD FIRE DAMAGES TIMBER CARGO AT LIVERPOOL
Rec. 10 p.m. LONDON, Nov.'27. Serious damage was caused by a fire in No. 3 hold of the Port Melbourne (9000 tons) at Liverpool. Firemen equipped with breathing apparatus brought the fire under control after a long fight. It was believed the fire had been burning slowly since the ship left Montreal, but only blazed up when she arrived at Liverpool. Her cargo includes thousands of tons of bacon, eggs, flour, and timber. Part of the timber cargo has been seriously damaged, but most of the egg cargo was saved. Fire appliances pumped thousands of gallons of water into the burning hold.
