SINGING TALENT

MELBA SCHOLARSHIP DOMINION FINALS IN • DUNEDIN An event of importance in the musical life of Dunedin will take place next year, when the finals of the judging for New Zealand’s entrant in the Melba Scholarship in singing will be decided in this city for the first time. The winner will go to Melbourne early in 1949, where she will be pitted against district winners from all over Australia. A considerable sum of money was left by Maddme Melba for the provision of the scholarship. Elimination contests will be held by all competition societies throughout New Zealand, and district winners will congregate in Dunedin, probably about September of next year. The finalist will then go to Australia, and, if successful against singers over there, will be entitled to study for three years at the Melbourne Conservatorium.

The Melba Scholarship is not judged on singing ability alone. The contestnats will be required to go through a searching examination under the Australian panel of judges. They will be tested for personality, musicianship, and questioned regarding ambitions—in fact, everything that helps to make up a true artist. The object of the scholarship is to find a voice with personality and possibilities.
