GAIN FOR OTAGO

CHAMPION JUNIOR SWIMMER

John Jarvis, the brilliant 12-year-old Auckland swimmer and holder of three New Zealand junior titles, has arrived in Dunedin to live, and at last night’s meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre his transfer from the Waitemata Club to the Kiwi Club was approved, subject to his clearance being forwarded. He is the younger brother of Walter and Sydney Jarvis, both well-known New Zealand champions, and, although he was born in Dunedin, all of liis swimming has been done in Auckland, where he established a record as an outstanding performer at a very early age. He swam 1000 yards before he was five years of age, and very soon afterwards achieved success in interclub competition. Last season Jarvis contributed materially to Auckland’s success in the War Memorial Shield competition at the New Zealand intermediate and junior championships at Invercargill, winning the 75 Yards and 100 Yards Junior Backstroke and 220 Yards Freestyle events, and finishing second in the 100 Yards Freestyle. His time of 80 3-ssec for the 100 Yards Backstroke broke the existing New Zealand record by more than llsec. He will be a competitor in the Otago championships on December 9 and 10.
