FRESH OUTBREAKS

VIOLENCE AND STRIKES IN ITALY ROME, Nov. 25. A new outbreak of violence and an agricultural strike broke the two-day lull in the internal disorders in Italy. Crowds attacked and damaged the headquarters of the Common Man Party in the Calabria province and in the industrial town of Modena, where they attempted to barricade the police inside their own headquarters. The police, with armoured cars, were unable to control demonstrations at Strongoli. Disorders also occurred at Caperizzuio, Cutro, and Maida. Terrorist riots, led by Communists, spread in Southern Italy. The towns affected were Cardito: A Communist shot and killed a member of the Premier’s (Signor de Gasperi) Christian Democrat Party. Bisignano: The police, resisting a Leftist attempt to invade the Common Man Movement headquarters, fired, killing one Communist and wounding another. The strikers returned the fire. Altamura: Communist strikers wrecked and set fire to the Christian Democrat, Common Man, and Monarchist Party offices and threw hand grenades at land owners’ houfees. Cosenza: A general strike Guardavalle: The police dispersed a mob trying to erect barricades This new wave of violence coincided with attempts by Signor do Gasperi to broaden the Government by including moderate Leftists.
