REJECTED BY SENATE
OPPOSITION’S FINAL • APPEAL REFERENDUM ON BANKING ISSUE CANBERRA, Nov. 26. The Senate has rejected the Opposition’s final appeal for a referendum on bank nationalisation. The Opposition leader, Senator Cooper, said that the Government was hurrying the Bill through the House “ with unseemly haste,” and moved that the Government delay sending the Bill for Royal Assent until a referendum had been held The Acting Attorney-general, Senator N. E. McKenna, replied that it was
wishful thinking to say that the Victorian elections had been lost because of the banking issue. He added that a quick test of legislation in the High Court would suit the banks as 'veil as the Government, which, in drawing up the Bill, had hoped that the banks would test its vality as soon as possible. The Senate may complete the committee and third reading stages of the Bill to-night. So far. 47 of the 61 clauses have been passed in committee, and three minor drafting amendments have been adopted. The Opposition forced a division on nine of the clauses.
