REGIONAL PLANNING

SOUTHLAND COUNCIL LOCAL BODIES WITHDRAW SUPPORT Special to the Daily Times INVERCARGILL, Nov. 26. Three local bodies have decided to withdraw their support of the Southland Regional Planning Council. They are the Invercargill City Council, the Southland County Council, and the Wallace County Council. “It takes people a long time to grasp the usefulness of new bodies such as this,” said Mr L. A. Niederer at a meeting of the Regional Planning Council to-day. Mr Niederer said that because the. Southland County Council had decided to withdraw its support of the Regional Planning Council, he would not be able to attend future meetings. He had been the county s representative. “This regional planning work was taken from something which was found to be necessary and essential in England, and it could serve a very useful purpose here,” said Mr Niederer. “It has never been more necessary to plan ahead.” “ It is for these bodies to do as they think fit, and not for us to intrude on their desires,” said the chairman, Judge Acheson, “but I think we should hold this matter over to enable the new councils to consider it.” A motion to this effect was carried.
