DEPUTY MAYOR

CR WRIGHT APPOINTED COMMITTEES APPROVED Cr L. M. Wright was appointed Deputy Mayor at the statutory meeting of the Dunedin City Council yesterday morning. The nomination was submitted by the Mayor, Mr Cameron, and approved by the council. Cr E. J. Anderson, who headed the poll at the recent council elections, was appointed chairman of the Transport Committee. Those in attendance were the Mayor, Mr Cameron, Crs E. J. Anderson. R. F. Barr, C. J. Hayward. W. B. Taverner, D. C. Jolly, N. D. Anderson, J. G. Barnes, L. J. Ireland, T. K. S. Sidey, W. S. Armitage, and E. J. Smith. After a brief introductory address by the Mayor, who congratulated the re-elected councillors and welcomed the new members of the council, the Mayor and councillors signed the statutory declaration of office. Tribute to Mayor “It is a great satisfaction to your councillors that for a further term they, will have you to preside over their deliberations and will have the advantage of your experience and sound judgment,” said Cr Taverner, in extending the congratulations of the council to the Mayor on his re-elec-tion. Cr Taverner added that the year that lay ahead was one of considerable importance in the history of the city and province, and the leadership of the city could be placed in no better hands than those of Mr Cameron. He

assured the Mayor of the full co-opera-tion of the council in the celebrations and functions to be held in the coming year and of its full consideration of all the problems that would confront it at the council table. The Mayor moved that the thanks of the council be tendered to Messrs J. McCrae, R. Walls, M.P., P. G. Connolly, M.P., D. G. McMillan, W. A. Hudson, M.P., M. F. H. Blain, and M. Connelly, M.L.C., for the faithful service rendered by them in the interests of the city as city councillors. He added that all had served for several years; and made special reference to Mr McCrae's work as chairman of the Transport Committee. Cr Barr seconded the motion, which was carried. The New Committees The Mayor submitted his nominations for the Standing and Special Committees and the Dunedin Drainage and Sewerage Board, and these were approved:— Public Works Section (comprising the Public Works Committee and the Water Supply Committee).—Crs Ireland, Taverner. N. D. Anderson, Armitage, and Barnes. Trading Section (comprising the Electricity, Transport, and Gas Committees).—Crs Wright, Sidey, E. J. Anderson. Barr, and Hayward. General Section (comprising the General, Reserves, and Library Committees).—Crs Jolly, Smith, Armitage, Sidey, Barnes, and Hayward. Finance Committee.—Crs Taverner, Ireland, Wright, Barr, Jolly, and E. J. Anderson. Civic Committee.—The Mayor (chairman), Crs Wright, Taverner, and E. J. Anderson.

Metropolitan Transport Licensing Authority.—Crs Smith (chairman), Sidey, Barnes, Armitage, and N. D. Anderson. Representatives on Dunedin Drainage and Sewerage Board: The Mayor (chairman), Crs Ireland, Taverner, Wright, Barr, Jolly, Sidey, N. D. Anderson, E. J. Anderson and Armitage. Chairmen of Committees Chairmen of committees appointed were:— Works Committee.—Cr Ireland. Water Committee.—Cr N. D. Anderson. Electricity Committee.—Cr Wright. Gas Committee.—Cr Barr. Transport Committee.—Cr E. J. Anderson. Reserves Committee. —Cr Jolly. General Committee. —Cr Smith. Library Committee.—Cr Sidey. Finance Committee. —Cr Taverner. Dates of Meetings The dates fixed for the first committee meetings were arranged so that all could be held before the first ordinary meeting of the council on December 17. At their first meetings, the committees will arrange their future meeting days and hours. Cr Ireland said that he intended to move at a later date that the meetings of the council should revert in future to Wednesday nights. He said that it had been the custom to hold meetings of the council on Wednesday nights until members of Parliament became members of the council, when the meeting night was altered to Monday. . The Mayor said that when the first ordinary meeting of the council was held on December 17 the council would decide on the nights of its future meetings. The Mayor’s honorarium was fixed at the same amount as previously, £6OO a year.
