CITY MEMBERS OF HARBOUR BOARD

PORT CHALMERS RESULTS

The final count for the election of city members of the Otago Harbour Board was completed yesterday, with the position among the elected candidates unchanged. The only alteration in the order of the 10 candidates is among the unsuccessful candidates, where Mr F. M. McLeod has moved up the list from last place, which is now occupied by Mr L. F. Evans. The final figures were:— Mcßae, Arthur (C.) .. .. 19,431 Winefield, W. J. (C.) .. 19,333 Carter, H. C. (C.) .. .. 19,248 Henderson, J. G. (C.) .. 19,153 Nicolson, F. L. (C.) .. 18,069 (Elected) Copland, D. (L.), 16,384; Macdonald, S. B .(L.), 15,231; Harrison, J. (L.), 14,680; McLeod, F. M. (L.), 13,990; Evans, L. F. (L.), 13,935; informal, 750. At Port Chalmers the final figures for the Mayoral contest give Mr T. Anderson (Ind.) 574 votes against Mr F. C. Smith’s 526. On the preliminary count Mr Anderson led his Labour opponent by 50 votes and the margin has been reduced by two in the final result. The Port Chalmers Borough Council was unchanged at the completion of the final check, but Mr R. J. N. Austin (Ind.) moved up from fifth place to fourth in the number of votes polled. The figures are:: Watson, H. S., 912; Neilson, L. J., 796; Forgie, J. G., 783; Austin, R. J. N., 756; Knewstubb, J. T„ 752; Campbell, W. D„ 692; Smith, F. C., 672; Reeves, Mrs R. E. S., 643; Bayliss, T. J., 567; Williamson, H., 565 (elected). Lewis, C. G., 493; Johnson, M., 438; Currie, R. W., 403; Mains, A., 390; Peterson, E., 262; Waugh, W. J., 259; informal, 13. For the first time there is a woman councillor at Port Chalmers. Mrs Reeves was, for most of the last term, a- councillor in the West Harbour Borough, but moved from Roseneath to Port Chalmers, where she successfully contested the election. She is a prominent Labour Party supporter and worker.
