OBITUARY
MR L. H. REYNOLDS The death has occurred of Mr Leslie Hunter Reynolds, who was regarded as one of the Dominion’s most highly qualified engineers. He was born in Dunedin in 1862 and lived in Gisborne for many years. As a young man he worked in many countries on the construction of port facilities. Mr Reynolds was a son of Mr and Mrs W. H. Reynolds, prominent settlers in the early days. After leaving the Otago Boys’ High School he served his apprenticeship with Kincaid McQueen and Co. From there he went as a cadet to the Government Survey Department, and after two years and a-half went overseas for further study and practical work. His first major work was associated with harbour improvements at Peterhead, Scotland. Later on he specialised in hydraulics, served under a famous engineer, and assisted in railway and canal building in Trinidad and Bolivia. When he returned to New Zealand in 1891, he was already a man of note in his profession. He was employed by the New Zealand Government to report on harbour works and railway construction, and subsequently provided harbour schemes for Riverton, Invercargill, and Coromandel. In later years he worked on the survey of the Otira tunnel. Mr Reynolds leaves one daughter, who lives in Scotland. He is survived also by one sister in Dunedin. MR J. B. BALHARRY P.A.
