Debutantes’ Ball At Port Chalmers
The first debutantes’ ball at Port Chalmers was organised in support of the ail carnival sports queen, Miss Phyllis Johnston, and was held in the Garrison Hall. Mr J. Edwards and a committee were responsible for the effective decorations. Mr Lindo Neilson was master of ceremonies. „ , . . Mr and Mrs A. J. Brown presented to the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs H. S Watson, the debutantes—Misses Patricia Johnston, Dayn Jarvis, Lavinia Bailey, Elleanor Stevens, Margaret Wordsworth, and Ngaire Hotton. All were dressed in white, and carried bouquets of freesias. After the presentation, Mr H. T. Glengarry, presiaent of the Combined Sports Committee, said that this was 'the last official act of the Mayor and Mayoress, and thanked them for their services during their term of office. In reply, the Mayor said that any help they had been able to give had afforded them great pleasure. He wished especially to mention that Mrs Watson had been of great assistance to him during his term.
