THE PLAYING OF TENNIS
Sir, —In this land of opportunity it is surprising that more people, who could play tennis and need the exercise, do not do so. Better organisation could improve the situation. Many housewives are starving for sunlight. They need recreation in the open, not in halls and cafes. Better admit them ’to tennis clubs than to hospitals. They consider the subscriptions too high for the little tennis they want on week afternoons only. T<yinis clubs might consider admitting associate members who would be allowed to play at times when members are not able to use the courts. The associates’ subscriptions should be one-fourth or less those of the members. Junior members might also be admitted .paying an even smaller subscription. Many matrons would need to be home by the time the children returned from school. Juniors might then use the courts till tea time. Shop and office employees might have a game before going home to their later meals. A good roll of associate and junior members would ensure the prosperity of any club. Committees should realise their obligations to the community. The one fault of tennis is that it tends to increase the inherent selfishness of some players. This can only be corrected by the large membership of a club, which might provide a critical gallery to watch matches.—l am, etc., M. Ewing MacCabe. [Abridged.—Ed. O.D.T.]
