The full card went to the post for the Middleton Hurdles, anu when the field settled down after jumping the first fence, Fading Light, The Raker, Open Cast, and Al-Sirat were the most prominent. As they streamed across the top Al-Sirat took over the running, and was followed by Fading Light, Open Cast, Liquidate, The Raker, and Sir Saladin. As they turned into the back Voltaire moved up fast to be on the outside of AlSirat, who blundered at the next fence, and Voltaire went on from Foreign Ways, Spanish Main, Fading Light and The Raker. Across the bottom and into the straight 'Voltaire and Foreign Ways showed the way to Spanish Main, Fading Light, The Raker and Wane. In the run to the judge. Fading Light came through to be a clear winner, while a photo showed that Foreign Ways just beat Voltaire for second, with Wane fourth, and Spanish Main fifth. Onen Cast came down over Al-Sirat when the latter blundered. Spring Nursery Sylvan and Discord were the last to leave and the first to become prominent •were Finigin and Airwyn, who were followed by Village Beauty. Balkis, Sky High and Robin Redbreast. As they galloped on to the cpurse proper, Finigin was just shading Airwyn, but the latter dropped out and Balkis started to come through. Finishing very solidly, Balkis won decisively from Finigin,- with Robin Redbreast just beating Blue Print for third, with Village Beauty fifth. The \ winner paid over three-quarters of a century.
